looking for snipe but none found… 50F but we were in a sunny hollow
Ah, yes, the time honored snipe hunt caper. The question is, who was the dupe and who was the duper?
Surprisingly few reports this spring despite some unseasonably warm and sunny days. Are people just not getting out much or are butterflies really this scarce. [moderators].

2:00-3:00. Overcast, in the upper 70s. In response to the moderators' question posed on April 2 regarding butterfly scarcity vs. time in the field, this has been my experience so far: Allaire State Park on 3/26 - none; Jamesburg Conservation Area on 3/29 - nope; Great Swamp WOC on 3/31 - nada; Tatum Park on 4/4 - 2 cabbage Whites! Hurrah!
[Thanks, Joyce - looks like it's just a slow start to butterfly season.]

Sun and temps in the mid-70s resulted in our first multi CW day, our first Common Green Darner dragonfly, and our first Pickerel Frog.

FOY yard butterfly. Poor Cabbage Whites—the only ones that get any appreciation are the first ones out; after that it is ho-hum. This may change if the decline in whites and some other Pierids continues.

Warm and sunny. One Azure at the WOC, the rest on the Orange Trail. All males as far as I could tell. A few on mud, most were patrolling and dogfighting. In one clearing there were many Azures and abundant Spicebush blooming, but no nectaring. Possibly an undercount, as they were continually coming and going. First report of azures this year in northern NJ. Usually the first sighting is of 1 or 2 but 15 is notable especially in the first few days of April [moderators].

2:20-3:20, full sun, high 50s. Appalachian Bowmen’s facility and Water Dog Training Area. One of the Commas was super-fresh, with pristine lilac wing margins; it was nectaring on Spicebush.

2:15-3:35 pm. Sunny high 50s temp. Not much plant growth yet. Was hoping for early Falcate Orangetips but no luck. Found only one patch of cress and no garlic mustard. Was surprised by an early duskywing. Was also surprised to see just one Mourning Cloak. You can see in the duskywing photo that the right hindwing and right antenna were malformed.

Beautiful sunny day that warmed to the low 60s. One of the two Cloaks was seen nectaring on Spicebush.

Sunny and 59f with slight breeze
[The submission originally read 5 Checkered Whites which was changed by the moderators to 5 Cabbage Whites. This is not an uncommon error as Checkered White comes first in the listing of whites. Checkered White would of course be a noteworthy sighting as it is listed as Threatened in NJ].

Sunny and 60's—sightings throughout the day. The Mourning Cloak was a flyover—I've yet to get a photo of one in the yard/woods. Cabbage Whites are consistently active.

Looking for Falcate Orangetips at the power-line cut near the lake. This was the first day this season that held great promise for possible finds, but unfortunately the Falcates were not yet to be found. Temp was around 72 degrees (from 12:45 to 2:00 pm), sunny and breezy, with the power-line cut and surrounding woods protected from the breeze. The area is slowly starting to bloom. Falcates here are particularly fond of nectaring on Garlic Mustard, but the only plants in bloom so far were in sunny openings in the woods.

not sure about the Duskywing.
[Moderators: spot on ventral hindwing and lack of white around the eye confirm this as Juvenal’s.]

While getting into the car about 2:00 I noticed this stunning cabbage white landing on the grass and then it flew to the daffodils and perched for quite a while. I didn't see the butterfly extend its proboscis but it was definitely checking out this flower - never seen them feed or show interest in daffodils.

One of those WTF moments. A very worn and faded Monarch flew right over my car near the intersection of Squakum Road and Allaire Road near the 195 cloverleaf. I was stunned to see a Monarch so early.
[Moderators: New early date for a North Jersey Monarch by 3 days.]
