March 2021 Sightings

Skittish Mourning Cloak who wouldn't let me get a good picture. First time I've seen this species in my backyard.

Just saw a black butterfly… in March! Not sure of any markings, as it was moving very swiftly to escape a chasing bird.
[moderator]: It is hard to see that it can be anything other than a Mourning Cloak.

First Cloak in yard in 3 years.
Warm and sunny.

power cut had a flyover which actually landed on my brim.

11:30-12:15, 55º, beautiful day.

My first time seeing a Mourning Cloak. It was flying right over the walking trail that runs through the Meadows, just over my head, then landed to sun itself.

1:30-2:15, low 60s, full sun. A flyover in the parking lot.

12:30-3:30 pm. Beautiful sunny day. I think 5 Mourning Cloaks is my highest single day total here. Some springs I have struggled to even find five the entire season.

missed mourning Cloak for the past 2 years

FOY butterfly and caterpillar for me in the same day. Also two Red-spotted Purple caterpillars just emerging from hibernauclum on willow.

[Moderator]: Very nice! You certaonly could walk by that in the winter and not realize that it was more than a dead leaf.

Trail was extremely muddy. No frogs calling.
