Merrill Creek Res. and Env. Preserve, Harmony Twp.
Warren County, NJ

Lots of fields but most without much nectar plants. The best field is past the twin port-a-potties at the end of Merrill Creek Road (off of Richline Road) on the northeast side of the reservoir. Most of the swallowtail action was in this field. We estimated that 10-15% of the tigers were dark females. The Tiger Swallowtail and Eastern Tailed Blue counts were low. A very large expanse of flowering Spotted Knapweed at the hawk watch site on the west side of the reservoir may be worth checking out for possible large numbers of buckeyes and perhaps a Variegated Fritillary or two.

Mostly cloudy, near 80. A rain shower in early afternoon.

Jenny Jump State Forest, Beaver Brook section
Warren County, NJ

12:50-2:00, mostly sunny, 75º. This area is accessed from CR 519 south of Hope. Proceed 3/4 mile from the blinker light in the village center to an unmarked left turn onto a gravel drive just south of Grace Community Church and almost directly opposite a driveway bordered by a solid white fence. The drive ends at a small parking area next to Beaver Brook, and you can walk what is labeled as the Jenny Jump Trail out to a cornfield. There is currently a tremendous bloom of Purple Loosestrife along the drive and the trail, and to both the left and right when you reach the cornfield. Walking is rather difficult in the plowed areas between the corn and the wetland. Although we had no luck today, we have had Long-tailed Skipper here in the past on the loosestrife.

10 AM - 3 PM; sun and clouds, high 70's. Brook/Mountain roads from Walpack to Roy Bridge area. Harvesters at edge of road/parking lot at Roy Bridge. Fields of bergamot but few butterflies in them. One dark swallowtail sp. One large nyphalid that was likely a Compton Tortoiseshell: heavy dark/light bars perpendicular to anterior edge of FW and dark/light postmedian bands that followed the irregular contour of the outer edges of the wings. But barely got bins on it and and not photographed.

All 13 Tiger Swallowtails were yellow. The garden hi count on the 11th was 17. Juniper Hairstreak in tatters. The Cloudless Sulphur flashed through the yard while we were looking for snouts in their usual location on one of our hackberry trees. So far this year in our yard we have seen more Cloudless Sulphurs (2) than Orange Sulphurs (1).

Tiger swallowtail numbers continue to be very high. I was able to count 15 on a single buddleia; likely more as some were roosting in our trees, out of view. Only two dark forms; all the rest yellow

All of my milkweed has monarch caterpillars ranging from 1st to 5th instars.
