I was at Rutgers Gardens from 11:30-12:45. Sunny and warm. Incomplete list; the Brazilian Skipper(s) were the focus (Mike Newlon and Ben Barkley were also present and may have more to add). Certainly one and probably two Brazilian Skippers are present as two very similar looking butterflies were frequently seen in a tangled flight together. Not to thicken the plot, but there may be a third, but that is not certain. The Brazilians never sat down for very long, making flights mostly through the yellow Cannas but zipping around the entire garden throughout my stay. 30 Sachems is easily an undercount.

10:10-12:20, mostly sunny, 73-82°. Of the 9 Leonard's, only 2 were in the usual area at the far southern end of the shale barrens. The others were up on the much more sparsely vegetated slopes along the northeast/eastern sides of the barrens. One was nectaring on Viper's Bugloss. The Gray Hairstreaks were almost all on Roundhead Lespedeza.

I observed the Brazilian Skipper for maybe 10 minutes total in the 2 hours I was there. Early on it was in constant motion only landing very briefly. I was lucky enough to see quite a bit of egg-laying, and later some feeding on the yellow Cannas.

Temps in the low 90s and very humid in the afternoon. The day's list is notable mainly for our first Sachem of the year—a species we did not get in the garden in 2017. Yesterday we had 3 swallowtail species, but not today!

9:50-12:15, sunny, humid, 77-84°. Flatbrookville-Walpack area (but not the main fields). After reading about the heavy butterfly visitation to Hairy Leafcup (Smallanthus uvedalius) at Cape May NWR, our goal was to find the only known North Jersey station for this plant. With the help of directions from Tom Halliwell, we did—it is on Walpack-Flatbrookville Road, about 1.7 miles S of the stone house that formerly housed the DWGNRA District Office. The colony stretches for 0.2 miles along the western roadside. Leafcup flowers were still numerous, but not a single butterfly did we find on them! However, it was a remarkably poor butterfly day overall, as our list shows. Native thistles weren't attracting much, either.

The Sachems were everywhere.!
I didn't see the Brazilian Skipper for the first 50 minutes. When I first saw it it was nectaring on a yellow flower at the top of one of the Cannas. It would nectar on one flower for maybe 30 seconds (shifting around that flower several times). Then it would move to the next flower in the row. After about 10 minutes it changed behavior and moved lower on the plant and would land on a leaf as if testing to see if was acceptable as a host for its egg. It would then fly to a nearby leaf and repeat. Most times, it didn't appear to have laid an egg. Then after about 5 minutes I lost it and didn't see it again even though I searched the rest of the Cannas in the garden several times. I concluded that it must be resting out of sight. I found a number of new eggs, but no caterpillars and only a few empty leaf shelters.

Beautiful morning, warm, slight NW breeze. This is the old section of Greystone Park where the historic Kirkbride building once stood until it was unceremoniously demolished last year. The area of fields and woods is now part of the Morris County Parks System and has potential as an interesting place for nature study. I was here from 10:25-11:15 AM.

9:30-12:45, 77°. Sun and clouds, breezy, less humid. After last year's encouraging total of 18 Leonard's Skippers here (on the same date), seeing only 3 today was a big disappointment.
