6 individuals in Avis Campbell Garden in downtown; 3 others in Iris Garden in Upper Montclair, about 4 miles away. All 9 individuals were relatively fresh. My guess is they were released at an event (unless there was a big flight of this species in NJ this morning)!

First Painted Ladies in yard since 2012, & I never had more than one. I found 14 Pipevine caterpillars today. The adult was hovering by Pipevine but I couldn't tell if she was laying eggs. Looked like the same worn Black Dash I had on the 28th.

Based on my observations today and the reports from the state, I take the comment I made yesterday back. All the Painted Ladies seem to be wild individuals, not releases.

We counted 30+ newly emerged Monarch over the weekend and that was from only about half of the plants that are easily accessible. It will be interesting to see how many survive late instar and actually pupate.

The new brood of Swallowtails have emerged and have been enjoying the flowers in the garden today along with two very hungry Hummingbird Clearwings working the Bee Balm from morning to night.

Also observed where some more Virginia Creeper Sphinx Caterpillars, these a group of earlier instar and a beautiful late Instar Radcliffe's Dagger Caterpillar feeding on our Bing Cherry tree.
