1:50-2:45. 87-90°. We checked the spot where another observer told us he recently had 50+ Com. Checkered-Skippers (at end of the grassy lane that leads east from the Whittingham office). We found them only on and near their White Clover nectar source. They are likely using Velvetleaf as a host plant.

Few butterflies in the big Stahl fields or the field west of the River Road Park gravel lot. There is a little Monarda there but nothing nectaring on it. Only a single grass-skipper.

I have happy to see lot's of egg laying during the late morning into the early afternoon. A Monarch was ovipositing on Common Milkweed, a Wild Indigo on Crown Vetch and a Silver-spotted Skipper on Black Locust.

Later in the afternoon, Mark saw Two Tawny Emperor on bear and raccoon scat in the area around the Blackberry and Wineberry vines.

9:00-1:30. Sunny, hot, and humid. We covered the South area of the Park, the Dog Park area, and the East area. Our best day butterflying this year. Amazing number of Juniper Hairstreaks, nectaring mainly on Narrowleaf Mountainmint. But where the mint was lacking, they were using Queen Anne's Lace. ETBs impressive as well. 3 of the Gray Commas were on the dirt road into the East area.

parked at the suggested barn but circumnavigated using blue and yellow/ridge trail. 9:15 a.m. to about 2 p.m. hot and humid; high 80s. all swallowtails seen (3 dark morph eastern tigers), but only one hairstreak in bad condition. lots of monarda; almost no milkweed. frogs, scarlet tanager.
