Old Mine Rd., north of Dingman's Bridge.

From Mettler Rd. north 1.5 mi. to large fallow field on left. Good butterflying from 1:00-2:20, stopped by a thunderstorm. All the action was on milkweed and a patch of Canada Thistle in the fallow field.
One large Monarch caterpillar.

1:45-3:10 PM. Warm and windy. Met Steve Glynn who reported Common Woodnymph and European Skippers. Most butterflies we found were around the White Barn where there is lots of milkweed and Canada thistle. Fields by the boat launch did not produce much; even the big patch of Orange milkweed in the north field held only a single fritillary.

10:15AM-1:15 PM. Not much nectar. Some milkweed at the parking lot at the base of Crater Lake Rd, a better patch on the south side of Blue Mtn Lakes Rd just E of Crater Lk Rd (NB on Park Service/Google Maps these are Skyline Drive and 624/Flatbrookville-Stillwater Roads respectively). Purple and Mourning Cloak flushed off the roadside. The Red-spotted Purple had small white smudges on its dorsal forewings just inboard from the tips. Would not stay for a photo. Small butterflies mostly on Red clover by Lake Success.

From the cemetery to a quarter mile past Jaeger Rd. checking milkweed. Most of the time was spent in the large fallow field (where I got rained out yesterday) looking at the many patches of Canada Thistle. The Variegated Fritillary & American Lady numbers are conservative estimates.

Butterfly activity has increased slightly around the yard today. I was hoping to see a Banded Hairstreak on the Milkweed. I did not. The Gray Hairstreak was a nice surprise.

Moth Caterpillar activity has increased the past few days. I found a Unicorn Caterpillar feeding on Blackberry, the first of season Fall Webworms in the Olive and several Grape Leaffolders in the Grape and Virginia Creeper.
