The Spiny Plumeless Thistles (Carduus acanthoides) near the barn are the main butterfly attractant here in late summer and early fall. This alien, invasive, annual or biennial species has consistently attracted more butterflies than the native goldenrods and asters which are also in full bloom. (This is just an observation and should not be interpreted to be a recommendation for planting.) Ocola Skipper has been observed on these thistles and Fiery and Long-tailed skippers should be looked for.
